Photo installations

1996-2004

I use photographic pictures as first material for my installations. I explore the aspects imperfect of pictures: blurred, shaded, blotted and overexposed etc. I identify them with the most sensitive and the most fluid latent memories. My installations prepare a place which offers atmosphere by indications-pictures where the spectator can walk and look through the projection on uncertain borders between the brightness and the darkness of the pictures. They become a process of recreation and remembering in the time which collects endlessly deposits of an evaporated memory.

Passage lumineux

1996, photographics installation, two slide projectors are installed (150 cm high) on two walls face to face, and project two images where we see a cyclist entering and leaving a pedestrian tunnel. Both projectors are placed in the most illuminated part of the images (open tunnel). When the viewer enters the projection, the shadows of the viewer appear on the image. And the projector has become a mediator, a third subject, to interfere in the dialogue between the spectator and image. The vision of the viewer is blinded by projections when he looks at the image that is a source of light. Thus, the viewer enters the projection where there appears to be in a loop of input-output that allows it to escape into the space-time.

Brume légère

The projected image (at human scale) provides a modern kitchen of the middle class. The projector is placed in a corner near the entrance to force the visitor to enters the projection without being warned. Thus, the shadow of the visitor is part of the projection. A photo is placed on the wall in the projection, at the place where there is a refrigerator. In addition to the projection, a bright orange thermos with the word "ALADDIN" is placed on a shelf (30.5x52x81cm).

Pissenlits

1998, série de balancier (II), intervention project on the installation of an artist and co-exhibitor, Yong-Jin Cui, as part of the exhibition: Mutation / Mutuel. An installation of Yong-Jin occupies the first two thirds of the space of the room of exhibition; composed of a big green carpet where there is an artificial tree, a table, two chairs, a monitor (film pictures of traffic on the freeway) and seven disemboweled and labelled sprinkling cans " rent me ". My project is continuing a research of the oscillation in the series of balancier. Like a mirror, a negative image (which was taken after Yong-Jin had finished its installation) is projected across the wall in the back. The slide projector is installed on a swing at a height of 60 cm. On the same negative, I wrote and engraved the word "pisenlit" (dandelion) repeatedly so that it could contaminate all negative.

1999, projecting photographic images of the Montreal metro Laurier, a color slide, a black-white negative and two slide projectors interacting with the shadow of a spectator.

Géographie de ma famille

2002-2004, composed of six magazines National Geographic and an interactive sound installation. Six journals selected for the common images, names that recall the scene are cut away. Two scanned image (each accompanied by a text) is inserted into two of the six National Geographic magazines. In 2004, on the occasion of the Zone flottante exhibit, I added a magazine with a picture-text carrying a glance at the city of Vancouver, chosen in connection with life on the fringes of urban society, as I have done for Montreal. I have included in this series, a piece that grows every time I expose. The interactive sound installation consisting of three laser pointers suspended, a color round photo and a sound: a whisper in French, English and Chinese (You are here, You are here and 你现在的位置) broadcast in loop.
